Dozing Ducks

Could not resist taking this photo of the Buff Ducks during their afternoon siesta. The only thing sweeter than ducks at their waterplay antics is ducks sleeping!

Highlands Available

We now have a variety of Scottish Highland beef cattle available for sale. .

Below the photos of the cattle you will see a few photos showing what a wonderful job they have done reclaiming overgrown mountainside full of Chinese maiden grass (miscanthus) and thorny black locust. We could not walk the mountain with this 8' tall invasive grass and prickly saplings growing everywhere; it was a jungle. Now even our 5 year old boys can navigate with no issues.

Note that the majority of this land is not prime tractor land so forage animals are the safest bet;
and the automatic fertilizer is a great bonus!

Below you can see the wild area on the left side of the fence;
which is how the cleared area used to look before cattle and goats.

Below you can see the cleared area versus the semi-wild area on the right side of the fence.
The semi-wild area has had Highland cattle on it for 1 year.

Below is another photo of the work the Highlands have done.
They were wintered on the 7 acres which allowed them to crush down the miscanthus grass, tread the bald areas where nothing was growing, and apply their fertilizer to the unfertile soil.

Just 2 days ago we put 15 of our cashmere goats on the 7 acres that the Highlands have been on.
Check back next spring to see how it has progressed over the winter and next fall to see major results.
They are very content with their new home as the old paddock is all grass now.

We still have a few gaps under the fences and gates to patch and will need to apply an electrified twine offset before I'll really feel comfortable having them over there.
A strand of barbed wire around the bottom would be ideal.

Next project is the creekside which is fenced off from livestock;
but with a new baby on the way something tells me that renovation will take a few years!
